Istanbul, Turkey (PRWEB UK) 15 June 2012
The Straits of Istanbul make a very interesting place to sail. Apart from the great historical location, the sailors need to follow a specific strategy when racing, due to the currents in the Straits. The boats need to race as close as possible to the shoreline when going north, passing in front of Reina Club. When they go in the opposite direction they need to stay away as far as possible from the shore, cruising in the middle of the Bosphorus Straits. However, before the sailors race in the Straits, they race in the Sea of Marmara, starting from the Kalamis Marina.
The first day of racing started on the wrong foot with light winds, but the second one could not be better. Strong breeze, sailing by the best sights of Istanbul and an amazing audience along the European and Asian coasts, were some of the highlights of the day. The boats started in front of the Dolmabahçe Palace and passed under the bridges. Finally, after two loops the boats finished in front of Reina Club and the VIP visitors, who were there to witness this beautiful event. Kia Lukunku had a great performance and moved on top of the leaderboard and ahead of Goblin-3 that was leading after the 1st day.
On the closing day the boats had to wait for a few hours in the water before the Northern breeze came. The candidate teams for the first place and the ticket to Porto Cervo were many and every one was giving its best. That brought a big crash between Fenerbahçe1 and 7 Bela, which had to abandon racing. The final winner of the 2012 American Express Bosphorus Cup was Goblin-3 that secured its participation to the Melges 32 European Championship in Porto Cervo. Nevertheless, there were many more teams racing and enjoying such as the two student teams from the Boğaziçi and the Bahcesehir Universities.
The event got international media attention through daily video news releases and its focus on technology.
