Demand for tickets to The Book of Mormon have been very stong according to Scalper.com The Online Ticket Marketplace also announced that it has discounted tickets to all Book of Mormon shows. The Book of Mormon is a religious satire musical with a book, lyrics, and music by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone. Best known for creating the successful animated comedy South Park, Parker and Stone co-created the music with Lopez, who has co-wrote and co-composed Avenue Q. The show lampoons organized religion and traditional musical theatre, reflecting the creators' lifelong fascination with Mormonism and musicals.
The Book of Mormon tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in northern Uganda, where a brutal warlord is threatening the local population. Naive and optimistic, the two missionaries try to share the Book of Mormon, one of their scriptures which only one of them knows very well but they have trouble connecting with the locals, who are more worried about war, famine, poverty, and AIDS than about religion.
After taking nearly seven years of development, the show opened in New York City on Broadway in March 2011. It has garnered positive critical response and numerous theatre awards including nine Tony Awards, one of which was for Best Musical and Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. An original Broadway cast recording was released in May 2011 and became the highest-charting Broadway cast album in over four decades, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard charts. Scalper.com currently has seats available to The Book of Mormon for all its dates.
Reviews for The Book of Mormon have been very positive:
"The best musical of this century. So impeccably produced on every level. Heaven on Broadway. The Book of Mormon achieves something like a miracle. All the folks involved in Mormon prove themselves worthy, dues-paying members of the church of Broadway. A celebration of the privilege, for just a couple of hours, of living inside that improbable paradise called a musical comedy." - Ben Brantley of The New York Times
"The Book of Mormon surely goes further than any other musical in Broadway history. Shrewd, hilariously profane, remarkably well-crafted and wholly hilarious. A night more emotional than many will expect." – Chris Jones of The Chicago Tribune
Another interesting topic about this production is that the timing could not have been better by its creators. The Republican Presidential Nominee, Mitt Romney also happens to be Mormon and the questions and jokes have started coming his way. At nearly every campaign stop someone takes a shot at him to ask his thoughts about The Book of Mormon. Romney has indicated that he plans to see the show, but that his schedule has not allowed him the time.
The Book of Mormon will be featured in 2012 and 2013 at The Eugene O’Neill Theatre in New York, New York, the Fisher Theatre in Detroit, Michigan, The Benedum Center in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, The Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, California and several other locations throughout the United States.
