Charleston Area Watersports Company Hosts Stand Up Paddleboard Race for Cancer Research

Charleston Watersport in Mount Pleasant, SC knows a thing or two about having fun in the water. For the third year in a row, this South Carolina watersports and surf shop is hosting the Shem Creek SUP Shootout, a stand up paddleboard race benefiting the St. Baldrick's Foundation and their mission of funding childhood cancer research. The only World Paddle Association-points race in South Carolina, this event promises to be a thrilling experience for a charitable cause.

The Shem Creek Shootout takes place this year on July 6 and 7th. The registration party begins at 6pm on July 6th at Red's Icehouse . Racers can expect fierce competition and a test of balance and agility while paddling the stand up paddleboards, and the over 8 mile long course which demands endurance and control. Red's Icehouse is also the location of the post-race party, food and beverage is included in registration.

Many Charleston area residents may be unfamiliar with stand up paddleboarding, also known as SUPs. The sport is a sort of cross between classic surfing and Outrigger Canoeing, with participants standing on the surfboard-shaped paddleboard and propelling themselves with a long outrigger-like paddle. The sport takes agility, balance, and gives a great workout. Each year, the exciting race draws in many newcomers to the sport, and Charleston Watersport offers reasonably priced lessons for anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of SUP before they get out on the water.
