Broadway Wellness, a Vancouver Massage Therapy Clinic, Now Offers Manual Therapy to New Moms with C-Section Scars

Manual therapy and postural alignment for new moms who have undergone Cesarian Sections (C-sections) can be a key component in returning to full health and a natural rhythm. Registered Massage Therapists are trained in myo-fascial (connective tissue around muscle) and visceral (connective tissue around organs) release techniques, which they use to soften, re-set, and align the layers of muscle and connective tissue which were cut through in the C-Section procedure.

Broadway Wellness is a Vancouver massage therapy clinic that now offers treatments in manual therapy and postural alignment. The clinic is built around a solid group of qualified Vancouver RMT Practitioners (Registered Massage Therapists), forming the core of our multi-disciplinary clinic.

Pregnancy, and the birth of a child, is one of the most important events that will happen in a woman’s life. Particular circumstances can make a Cesarian section birth a true necessity. This involves an incision through the mother’s abdomen and uterus to deliver the baby. As the incision heals, scar tissue forms. Scar tissue is tough, by nature, allowing function to take precedence over form. It is less vascularized, less hydrated, and less elastic than regular tissue, as it is designed to heal a cut quickly and efficiently.

Monica Cleland is the owner and operator of Broadway Wellness, a Vancouver massage clinic, as well as, a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) who participates in teaching the fascial and visceral portion of the RMT curriculum at the West Coast College of Massage Therapy. According to Monica, "All scars heal differently. Many women will have an incision that heals into a soft, mobile scar, which moves with the body, and causes no further problems. Some women’s bodies will create an excessive amount of scar tissue in response to an incision – resulting in thick, tough scars which cause pulling and tethering forces in the body. If the body tends to heal with excessive scar tissue, working with scars to soften them, and to integrate them in relation to the rest of the body becomes very important."

Untreated scars may result in chronic, seemingly unrelated problems which develop in the years and even decades to come. Here's how this can happen:

  • Problems can develop with Postural Alignment leading to Chronic Pain.
A thick scar can pull and tether surrounding tissue over time, causing the body to slowly pull forward and down. This type of adaptation is part of what can lead to chronic shoulder and neck issues, low back pain, and headaches.

  • Problems with Digestion or Urination can develop.
The structures in our body must move freely in order to perform their function. The structures in close proximity to the scar can become bound down and tethered as they get drawn toward the scar over time. This can lead to problems such as poor bladder function (incontinence, excessive urination, or prolapsing), and IBS symptoms (constipation, and diarrhea). Such conditions occur because the colon and bladder share an anatomical space with the uterus in the pelvis, and overlying tough and thickened scars can cause three dimensional pulling and tethering in the general area over time.

For people who notice they have thick and dense scar tissue – whether it’s been 6 weeks, or 10 years – gentle fascial mobilization can be highly effective in correcting postural alignment issues, reducing chronic pain symptoms, and working with digestive or bladder symptoms that have developed over time.

Many Registered Massage Therapist s at Broadway Wellness are trained in fascial techniques to manually mobilize and soften scars. They have been providing this work, as well as, teaching clients gentle home-care techniques for their C-Section scar. Fascial release can often be the missing link. It allows re-hydration, mobilization, and softening of the tougher scar tissue, and re-activation of the ground substance that supports the fascial fibers, resulting in softer and more mobile scar tissue that allows the body to move freely.

Broadway Wellness is a friendly and community focused, Vancouver massage therapy based clinic, with additional focus on naturopathic medicine, and as a chiropractic clinic, offering services in a beautiful and expansive centre, conveniently located in the heart of Fairview – near Broadway & Oak, in Vancouver BC, Canada. The RMTs and clinic practitioners are a group of like-minded, friendly, and personable therapists who, within their individual practices, share a dedication to helping their clients come back into alignment with themselves and their health.
