Over the last couple years, Maryland has become more visible on the hip-hop radar. Rapper Wale has garnered recognition for the area with his recent mainstream success. The DC underground music platform is watching for the next star to rise above the masses. All eyes are on the nations capital.
“It's all about when opportunity comes, will you be ready. More importantly, will you capture it."
–Reveneu
Hip hop talent Reveneu explains, “Substance is the only thing that carries over from market to market, and genre to genre.” Music fans want to connect with the artist on a level that forms a real emotional connection between artist and fan. This aspect alone is what makes the art of music so compelling. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska and now a Montgomery County resident, Reveneu (Rodrick Tebeck) has been exposed to many diverse environments.Which he believes reflects in his music, and makes him appealing. When it comes to music, inspiration comes from all places far and near. Having the ability to make music that the public can appreciate, beyond the material pleasures, is something that isn’t being offered by many artists in this day and age. “Experience is the best teacher,” says the 22 yr old ceo/rapper. When reflecting on past struggles, it is clear that Reveneu is a results-driven individual. “If you’re not seeing results, change your approach.” Between work and classes at the local community college, Reveneu faced the realization that he was stretched too thin.
At the age of 21, he chose to quit his job and drop out of school; sacrificing any hope for conventional success. Rerouting and focusing all of his time into music, he began to see a positive turnover. Taking advantage of the internet and social media, the young entrepreneur is using outlets all over like Facebook and Twitter as well as YouTube to gain notoriety and widen his fan base. Since the spring release of his debut album “All or Nothing vol.1”, Reveneu is still the topic of discussion among debaters. Performing regularly tied in with endless recording sessions, he is working rigorously to keep his name a trending topic. Affiliated with the multimedia powerhouse Bread Winner Group (BWG), the main focus right now for both entities are expansion. This partnership will provide a new valve for artists in the DC area to work through, to gain exposure.
Everyone is a rapper now. The difficulty in getting heard by the right person is a lot. If you don’t have a catchy hook or a street banger, nobody will listen to you. “Quality and efficiency is what sets you apart. You have to be everywhere,” says Reveneu. That’s how you hold a reputation as an artist. Montgomery County, Maryland has become more popular for their underground hip-hop involvement, and there’s a pool of artist here thirsting for recognition. Being able to overcome the naysayers isn’t easy in the DMV. Reveneu will need to offer another perspective to gain the likes of the masses. With little relativity in the nation’s capital he will have to engage with that audience as well. We have more to see from this new artist.
