Norfolk Redevelopment & Housing Authority (NRHA) and Norfolk State University (NSU) will present a workshop to highlight Fathers Day weekend entitled, “Involved Dads…Contributing to Healthy Communities,” beginning at 8 a.m. June 16 at the new NSU Student Union building. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Deputy Secretary, Maurice Jones will be the keynote speaker.
Sessions will focus on mending the father-child relationship, ways for single mothers to facilitate a healthy father-daughter relationship when the father is no longer in a relationship with the mother and a discussion panel.
Concurrently, there will be a Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) workshop at the Grandy Village Learning Center, 2971 Kimball Loop. West Point Military Academy cadet mentors and faculty will provide students a hands-on lesson in “robo-math,” the science of using math to design, construct and program a robot.
The Fatherhood Celebration Basketball Tournament will be held at the Grandy Village Recreation Center, 3017 Kimball Terrace, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16. There will also be children’s educational activities, employment opportunities, vendors, free Boys & Girls Club memberships, bicycle giveaways, a barbecue, games and music. Youth will take the Safe Summer pledge at 2:45 p.m.
