Statement from The Michaels Organization on Red Star Apartment Fire

Following the devastating fire at the construction site of Red Star Senior Apartments in Oakland, California, on June 14, 2012, the Chief Operating Officer of The Michaels Organization, John J. O’Donnell, released the following statement.

The Michaels Organization and LINC Housing are thankful that the devastating fire that consumed the construction site of the Red Star Apartment development in the early morning hours of June 14 did not result in any loss of life.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by local, state, and Federal officials, and The Michaels Development Company and our non-profit development partner LINC Housing are fully cooperating with this investigation.

The Red Star Apartment Community was set to transform a long-vacant lot on the city’s west side into a new 119-unit mixed-used, transit-oriented apartment community offering affordable one- and two-bedroom apartment homes to income-eligible seniors on the former site of the Red Star yeast factory.

The Michaels Organization hopes to be able to rebuild the project as soon as possible so that the community can finally reap the benefits of the hard work so many organizations put into this project over the past few years.

However, while the investigation is ongoing, The Michaels Organization and our partners will be unable to comment further.
