JUNEAU, Alaska (PRWEB) June 20, 2012

The Tongass National Forest was honored as a Children’s Forest when artist Louise Snyder Phillips presented her painting, “Mystery of the Deep, Dark Forest,” to the Forest Service’s Alaska Regional Forester Beth Pendleton in a Washington, D.C., ceremony June 11.

“With this painting we honor children and their creativity everywhere; on all our public lands, especially on the lands on the Tongass National Forest, we honor all the children that live within our region,” said Pendleton as she dedicated the 4 foot-by-5 foot acrylic abstract work. “This painting embodies the energies of hundreds of thousands of creative minds, hearts, and hands which hold bright futures as forest stewards and caretakers of natural and cultural resources in Alaska and on the Tongass.

Mrs. Phillips has been very active in the arts and conservation for many years, and has several paintings in progress for donation to various Children’s Forests throughout the country. A retired educator turned artist, Mrs. Phillips has also written children’s books, composed plays, written songs, and arranged dance programs centered around nature, art, and music, and celebrating the energy and curiosity of children and their roles as future stewards. She was recently honored for her Children’s Gardens at the Mayo Clinic.

As a Children’s Forest, the Tongass National Forest will act as a lead partner for the community to create a network of outdoor spaces and programs to get kids and families outside and active. Each Children’s Forest will vary in implementation based on local needs, but all will be rooted in Kids in the Woods goals that include:
▪ Connecting Kids, Families, & Adults to Healthy, Outdoor Activities Across All Landscapes.
▪ Supporting Economically Vital Communities by Creating New Education and Career Pathways.
▪ Providing Professional Development Opportunities for Educators.
▪ Fostering Climate Change Understanding and Solutions.
