For a third year in a row, Warren Buffett set records with his annual lunch auction. With only a few moments left in the auction, the bidding wasn’t even half as much as last year’s record, which was over $2.6 million.
Then, at the very last moment, bidding skyrocketed, almost tripling from $1.23 million to $3,456,789, which was somewhat of a numerical miracle as well. The auction crowd was elated and broke into cheers.
The auction was sponsored on behalf of the Rev. Cecil Williams in San Francisco who runs the Glide Foundation. At the close of the auction, approximately 500 people yelled with delight and clinked champagne glasses together to celebrate the momentous occasion.
Later in the evening, Williams said, “We just had a most amazing, shocking experience occur in our great city. I am extremely grateful to my friend Warren Buffett for his exceptional commitment.”
The auction takes place on eBay each year. This year 106 bidders vied for an opportunity to dine with billionaire, Warren Buffett at the Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in New York City. The winning bidder will also be able to bring along seven friends for the dinner with Buffett.
Over the years, the auctions have been responsible for bringing in more than $14.6 million for the Glide Foundation. Glide runs a church in The Tenderloin district of San Francisco and serves meals to the needy. The record take for last year was $2.63 million.
Buffett commended Williams and Glide for their outstanding contribution to the community, saying, “You change lives. I congratulate you.”
Auctions in general always generate a great deal of excitement with most people because they provide a unique type of camaraderie. In many cases, penny auctions also result in bidders getting a great deal on a super-hot item they’ve been wanting.
