Equity Management (PRWEB) June 20, 2012 -- 7610 Maple, an affordable apartment building in Takoma Park, Maryland has been named the Best Small Affordable Housing Project by the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers (HAND).
Owned by MHP (Montgomery Housing Partnership) and managed by Equity Management, the 45 year old brick building was renovated in 2011 and serves as a model for how preservation of older buildings can be completed successfully. The building was purchased by MHP in 2008 after the original owner’s plans to sell the property to luxury condo developers did not come to fruition. When the property was purchased, it was deteriorated and had become a fire hazard.
Sustainable green features and materials were used throughout the design and renovation. Two additional floors were added as well as a 2,000 square foot community center and computer lab. Construction began in 2010 and was completed in September, 2011. By December, 2011 the building was fully leased.
The preservation of 7610 Maple has also received national recognition, including an honorable mention for the Best Metropolitan/Urban Housing from the Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Awards of Excellence.
