Former Athlete Credits Sports for Surviving Horrible Car Accident and Lengthy Coma

June 21, 2012 marks the 17 year anniversary of a tragic event in the life of a former swimming star and high school athlete. The event later took on a story that was told in the book, "Return From a Comatose Mind." The book offers real recollections of dreams while comatose and the long, painful road to recovery.

June 21, 2012 will mark the anniversary of an event that changed lives forever. A car full of high school students were returning from a day at the lake when a horrific thunderstorm came from nowhere. The setting set itself up for a fatal traffic accident when the minivan the students were in collided with a tractor trailer traveling at 70 miles an hour. The accident changed perspectives on how the students cope with unfortunate events that happen in their lives.

“It was a perfect recipe for disaster,” says Jason Deierlein, author of the book, Return From a Comatose Mind. The inspirational book not only tells of the importance of sports shaping developing bodies, but also how pivotal it is to always look forward. The author notes that it is important to always be grateful for what people have. That’s what Mr. Deierlein had, a chance to recover from something too few people have a chance to not only survive, but regain abilities taken away.

“Not everybody was going to be able to regain all that I was going to have the opportunity to and I was quick to notice that,” Deierlein says. “The group of us didn’t worry about what we did not have. Instead we supported each other encouraged each other to make the best of whatever opportunity we had.”

Everybody was in a bad situation, but the group made an effort to keep each other thinking about positive events rather than only focusing on the bad ones. That was important because the human body responds to how its mind perceives the situation. “When one is thinking positively, than they can expect good things to follow, however, when one’s mind is filled with negative thoughts, then worse events usually follow.”

Instead of allowing self pity and negativity to dominate his recovery, this author chose to count his blessings of being a former swimming star and chose to react to his unfortunate event by working hard at recovery. This is truly a story written to inspire the lives of us all, and a tale recounted to show a tangible reason why we should be grateful for all we are given in life.
