Barbara M. Traynor, author of Second Career Volunteer: A Passionate, Pennywise Approach to a Unique Lifestyle (published by AuthorHouse), has discovered a way to enjoy a life of travel and adventure at little financial cost.

“In 2009, I self-published, (Second Career Volunteer: A Passionate, Pennywise Approach to Retirement), because every book I read addressed how to handle accumulated financial resources,” explains Traynor, “But, what if you don’t have any? Due to circumstances, I didn’t. For me, volunteering with free room and board became a viable option, allowing the opportunity for travel and fun on a budget. I am passionate about getting-out and giving-back. It’s all about awareness!”

With this second edition of Second Career Volunteer, Traynor dispenses her expertise to a broader audience, including college graduates, the unemployed, Baby Boomers, as well as, pre and post-retirees. She explains further in the introduction of Second Career Volunteer:

“Change happens. However, when something as predictable as a book’s targeted audience expands to encompass unexpected interested parties, it must be acknowledged.

When I first heard about volunteering with organizations that offer free room and board in exchange for workplace skills, I followed my instincts. This became a deliberate year-long action. Over the past six years, day by day, while volunteering and while sharing my experiences at various book events, I came to realize that what I had discovered is appropriate for pre and post retirees, Boomers, college graduates looking for careers, and those displaced/downsized by the recent financial crisis.

I now describe my volunteer lifestyle as silly putty. It is creative and can be stretched or compressed to fit your schedule.”

Traynor’s unique experiences led many of her friends and family to ask, “How can I do what you do?” That’s when Traynor knew a practical and comprehensive how-to guide was in order.

“This book gives hope, a budgetary option that provides food and shelter while allowing the individual to contribute to the greater good,” says Traynor.

Traynor has volunteered in Alaska, Florida, Arkansas, Alabama and Albuquerque, offering her skills as an Administrative Assistant to many non-profits. She gives readers this practical advice: “Taking a bit of time to get out and give back does not mean changing your life permanently. It is a small bit of time – on a budget – to be active and involved in a totally new environment. Try it, you might like it!”
