Sojourn Bicycle Tours, based in the Lake Champlain Valley of Vermont just south of Burlington, will debut their new Vermont Bicycle & Brew trips this summer. Long a prized destination for cyclists, Vermont's craft breweries are garnering international attention. Burlington, Vermont's largest city, is ranked among the top five cities in the world for beer lovers - right up there with Amsterdam and Brugges. What's more, tucked in the peaceful rolling countryside, so well suited to bicycling, are dozens of high-quality microbreweries.
The trip begins and ends in Burlington and includes a private welcome dinner and beer pairing with the brewmaster of Otter Creek. Cyclists will get their first real challenge of the trip the following day with a climb up Middlebury Gap en route to Montpelier, Vermont's State Capital. Along the way an award-winning brewmaster will regale the group during a tasting and lunch. The route proceeds east for a visit to Trout River Brewing and a stay at the beautiful Inn at Mountain View Farm before looping back west to Stowe.
Hill Farmstead Brewery, in the heart of the burgeoning local food movement near Hardwick, plays host to a picnic lunch and the chance to pair neighboring Jasper Hill Farm's cheese with an ancestral or single hop series IPA. Wrap up the day with a reception at the Trapp Brewery hosted by Sam von Trapp, grandson of Maria and Captain von Trapp who were immortalized in the musical The Sound of Music.
A classic cycling loop from Stowe through Smuggler's Notch provides opportunity to visit several points of interest including award winning Smuggler's Notch Distillery, venerable Johnson Woolen Mills, and Rock Art Brewery. The final day of the trip includes exploring Trapp Family Lodge trails by mountain bike, or a road ride for those who want to stick to paved routes. A stop at the Alchemist for a Heady Topper en route back to Burlington caps off the trip. The annual Burlington Brew Fest July 21-22 may tempt a few people to stick around for the weekend after the first trip.
This six-day, five night trip spans the northern portion of Vermont with lodging at fine country inns, including a two-night stay at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe. Mileage averages 50-60 miles per day over rolling, and sometimes hilly, terrain.
