On June 22, dogs across the country will spend the day at work with their proud owners. The occasion is “Take Your Dog to Work Day,” the day when people get to show their furry family members off to their co-workers. Created by PSI (Pet Sitters International) in 1999, the day has gained in popularity as dogs have become increasingly more accepted in the workplace.

The benefits of having dogs in an office workplace have been proven. Dogs contribute to camaraderie, productivity, and a less-stressful work environment. Of course there are some inevitable problems to watch out for. Employees with allergies, barking or disruptive behavior, and there is always the risk that Fido will mistake the boss’s carpet for a bathroom.

According to a recent survey by the American Pet Products Association, about 2.3 million dogs tag along and wag along to work with 1.4 million dog owners every day. Capitalizing on the trend is a dog services company, Fresh Patch, which has partnered with FedEx to ship containers fitted with living grass nationally.

Andrew Feld, the founder of Fresh Patch (http://www.freshpatch.com), says that the product is ideal for taking care of a dog’s bathroom needs in an office environment. “The grass is plush, long-lasting, and dirt-free—plus it controls odors.” says Feld. “These are qualities that are appreciated not only in the home setting for which Fresh Patch was initially designed, but also in offices, and in hotels when dog-owners are traveling.”

According to Feld, dog owners should use “Take Your Dog to Work Day” wisely. “If there is an overall pleasant experience at the office, management may decide to rethink the company dog policy.” Feld notes that a dog-friendly work environment can also help to promote dog adoptions. “Many working people want the companionship of a dog, but are reluctant to get one if they have to leave the dog at home all day while they are at the office. If their companies have a dog-friendly policy, they might be more likely to adopt a dog."

Fresh Patch can contribute enormously to a company’s transition to a dog-friendly workplace and to furthering the acceptance of dogs at the work site. “Dog owners want to enjoy the companionship of their dogs all the time,” says Feld. “Fresh Patch makes it easy for them to take their dogs to work--not just on one special day of the year, but on every single day of the year.”
