The Flying Fruit Fantasy, an original Harborplace tenant in 1980 that introduced Fruitshakes to Baltimore, is returning to the inner harbor as an on-the-job training site for youth aging out of the foster care system. The concession is owned and operated by The Choice Program, a signature program of UMBC and The Shriver Center, and a nationally recognized initiative that serves Maryland’s youth.
In 1992 the Flying Fruit Fantasy donated a franchise to The Choice Program for a concession in Oriole Park. This concession remains in operation near Section 30, providing dozens of disadvantaged and delinquent youth with on-the-job training each baseball season.

In 1992 the Flying Fruit Fantasy donated a franchise to The Choice Program for a concession in Oriole Park. This concession remains in operation near Section 30, providing dozens of disadvantaged and delinquent youth with on-the-job training each baseball season.
The Choice Program won the RFP issued by the City of Baltimore for the promenade site in February, and opened its doors to the public with a limited menu in early June. Choice AmeriCorps members Caseworkers will supervise youth referred from the Ready By 21 Initiative, with funds provided through The Family League of Baltimore City. The program also receives support from the Open Society Institute.
This concession was created, in part, with help from volunteers from Saval Foodservice. These volunteers donated their time and experience to design and equip the stand, create and price the menu, and set operating policies and procedures.
At least 40 youth will participate in this on-the-job paid work experience each summer season.
The menu will include not only Fruitshakes but also soft frozen yogurt, smoothies, sodas, lemonade and water. In addition to providing youth in need with real world work experience and a summer income, the kiosk will provide a welcome oasis of healthy alternatives to fast food, as Flying Fruit Fantasy Fruitshakes contain no fat, cholesterol, or artificial coloring, are sweetened naturally without corn syrup, are fortified with Vitamins A and B and contain 100% of the RDA of Vitamin C.
