Schools are feeling the crunch as economic strain further cuts back an already underfunded educational system in British Columbia. A group of parents from Hamilton Elementary school took matters into their own hands as they nominated Edina Bajramovic, a kindergarten teacher from their school to win the 6th Annual Great Teacher Awards, a contest out on by Canadian Family Magazine to recognize and celebrate the top teachers in the country.
Mrs. Bajramovic was nominated by a parent of a student whose life she touched dearly. Now, she needs online votes to beat out the other 12 Canadian teachers for the title of Greatest Teacher.
"Edina takes it upon herself to ensure that each child has the best life possible," said one parent. "She 'raises' her students by teaching them kindness, sharing and overall caring. We know she is the most deserving teacher and would love for her efforts and genuine kindness and love to be recognized."
Bajramovic is one of 13 semi-finalists selected from across Canada from a pool of 500 nominees. The top three candidates will receive a cash prize of $2,500 to be used toward programming and supplies for their school and will be featured in the September issue of Canadian Family magazine.
Mrs Bajramovic says that both she as well as the students and community are excited and have been checking the votes daily. Local business, AB Web Design has been supporting the teacher by promoting her on their own website since the contest began. The online voting is gaining momentum, and with more than 10,000 votes. Mrs. Bajramovic was in fourth place on June 18th.
She says she plans to keep checking the votes daily. Please support her and Hamilton Elementary by helping her place in the top three. The top three teachers will earn a $2,500 prize for their school to go towards supplies and programming.
"Earning the prize money for Hamilton school would be an honour," states Bajramovic, "especially during this tough time in education where schools are used to losing money, funding and resources." Bajramovic herself was on the chopping block this year as the government raised class sizes across the province, cutting jobs and laying off hundreds of teachers. Luckily for her she was able to keep her job at the school she is working at this year for another year, but many others did not share the same fate. Parents are glad to know that Bajramovic will spend another year at Hamilton and hope that their nomination can give some recognition to the caring teacher and bring some well deserved funding into their school.
The students have been voting daily. Some have even made T-shirts to wear encouraging other students and parents to vote daily.
