Palm Springs ranks as the least expensive destination in California this summer based on the cost of its lodging. This finding is based on a recent survey by CheapHotels.org. In coming up with the rankings, the site specifically compared hotel rates in 30 California destinations for the timeframe spanning June through August 2012.

Just how budget-friendly are hotels in Palm Springs? On average, visitors to this desert resort area will spend a mere $51 to stay overnight in the cheapest available double room. Also very affordable according to the survey are the California cities of Anaheim, Sacramento and Los Angeles. In all three of these destinations, summer rooms can be found for less than $60 per night.

In Laguna Beach, Santa Monica and Yountville, hotel pricing is a completely different story. There, travelers will have to pay, on average, at least $197, $256 and $327 nightly. Those figures make them the three most expensive vacation locales in California.

The following table shows the five most and least expensive destinations in California based on the average rate for the cheapest available double room (minimum: 2-star hotel) there. The time period covered spans June–August 2012.
