Newport Beach, California (PRWEB) June 22, 2012
An Orange County wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the County of Orange, Deputy Darren Sandberg, and others for the death of Manuel Loggins Jr.
The complaint alleges that Manuel Loggins Jr. was lawfully sitting inside his vehicle when Orange County Deputy Darren Sandberg detained him without probable cause. Without warning, the Deputy proceeded to assault and batter Manuel Loggins Jr., who was unarmed, ending in fatal gunshot wounds inflicted by the Deputy’s firearm.
At the time, Loggins was a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton. He was shot and killed on February 7 near San Clemente High School. He was with his two daughters at the time of his death.
Unfortunately, Manuel Loggins’ death is just one of thousands that occur in Orange County on a yearly basis.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 17,204 people died in Orange County in 2008, second only to San Diego for most deaths in that year. Although Orange County’s large population may contribute to the county’s high death rate, there are still a significant number of wrongful deaths reported on a weekly basis.
The 2009 California Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) shows that 141 people suffered wrongful death car accidents in that year. Of those who lost their lives, 41 were pedestrians, 12 were on bicycles, 17 were riding motorcycles, and 62 were alcohol related wrongful death collisions in Orange County.
Brian Chase, senior partner of the Bisnar | Chase law firm, feels that a number of Orange County fatalities could have been prevented, especially in the case of Manuel Loggins Jr.
“Having assisted thousands of victims since 1978, we are well aware of the type of emotional trauma and rehabilitation that family members must undergo following the death of a loved one. The information released about the circumstances leading to Mr. Loggins’ death implies grave misuse of power by the Orange County Sherriff’s Department. Mr. Loggins’ family will never get back what they have lost, but they do have an opportunity to hold the wrongdoers accountable.”
