The award, sponsored by the Philadelphia Business Journal and supported by Healthiest Employers, a national research firm, identifies employers in southeastern Pennsylvania whose wellness policies and programs demonstrate a commitment to a healthy workforce.

The Philadelphia Business Journal selected companies based on a corporate assessment that was administered by the Healthiest Employers firm. Participants were asked to respond to questions about their wellness programs, leadership commitment and strategic planning, among other categories. Results were then scored using a format developed by a panel of professionals from health, academic and business backgrounds.

Health Advocate’s on-site wellness program began when the company originated in 2001. The program features access to a personal wellness coach coupled with comprehensive, up-to-date health and wellness information; a health risk assessment tool; weight loss programs; and MedChoice Support™, an interactive, online tool that helps employees weigh the pros and cons of tests, procedures, treatments and medications.

In addition, Health Advocate opened an employee fitness center on site last September. Employees are able to participate in yoga and Pilates classes led by a trained instructor. The fitness center includes equipment such as treadmills and stationary bikes. Health Advocate also regularly holds health fairs for its employees.

The Healthiest Employers were recognized at an awards breakfast on May 31 at the WHYY Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons in Old City.
