In response to growing public interest, ABC recently visited with Dr. Tom Lavin of Surgical Specialists of Louisiana and Mississippi to tell their viewers about POSE, an “incisonless” weight loss procedure that has helped transform the lives of patients who are 25-70 pounds overweight. The POSE procedure is unique because it offers a procedural remedy for a wide variety patients who have ongoing weight problems but do not qualify for bariatric surgery.

“POSE is for patients who want to lose 25 to 50, maybe 60 or 70 pounds, so it’s a much different group of people than we normally approach in bariatric surgery” says Dr. Tom E. Lavin, MD, FACS, advanced laparoscopic surgeon and founder of The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana and Mississippi. During POSE, Dr. Lavin uses innovative surgical tools to access a patient’s stomach through their mouth and reduce its volume by suturing small folds in the stomach walls. As a minimally invasive, one-hour outpatient procedure, POSE causes little to no discomfort and can bring stable weight loss results. After the procedure, the patient generally returns home the same day and can resume all normal activities within just a few days.

An important advantage of POSE, as indicated in the interview, is that it helps reduce patients’ hunger cravings. ABC’s Deborah Roberts reported on Good Morning America that some patients are saying it may be the solution to help them find “a permanent way to curb [their] appetite to lose weight for good.” Dr. Lavin’s patients have described: “It’s not a diet, it’s just the way you choose your food… and the amount is so much less. You get full quicker.”

While the POSE procedure is certainly not going to replace bariatric surgery for obese patients, Dr. Lavin believes that this procedure has a potential to help a large group of patients who previously had no access to much needed surgically assisted weight loss solutions.

“A lot of patients don’t want surgery, but an endoscopic procedure has a tremendous appeal, because it’s an outpatient, one-hour procedure with no incisions…it can help decrease hunger drive, decrease cravings, help fill-up on a small amount and lose weight after years of yo-yo dieting up and down. That has tremendous appeal” says Dr. Lavin. “[Patients] don’t crave unhealthy foods anymore, they crave salads or fruit or vegetables. That helps you know that you have triggered some hormonal or neurologic changes. We’re impacting the GI hormones and peptides that modulate hunger drive and cravings at the central level, and that’s key for long-term weight loss.”
