On September 29, 2009, 8 year-old Brody Cole lost his battle with mitochondrial disease. In the two years leading up to his passing, Brody said a special prayer that included the following ending: “And at the playground, I slide down the slide. Amen.” No one knows exactly what the meaning was behind his prayer, but with the help of Little Tikes Commercial and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, his dreams of an inclusive playground were fulfilled.

PlayPower LT Farmington, Inc., manufacturer of the Little Tikes Commercial Brand of Playground Equipment, along with Playworx Playsets, LLC, joined forces this month with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to help make the dreams of one very special young boy come true.

On September 29, 2009, Brody Cole lost his battle with mitochondrial disease. In the two years leading up to his passing, Brody said a special prayer that included the following ending: “And at the playground, I slide down the slide. Amen.” No one knows exactly what the meaning was behind his prayer, but Brody’s many friends and loved ones wanted to see his dream of adding an inclusive playground to “his hospital” Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite fulfilled.

After seeing Brody’s story on the local news David Howard, owner of Playworx Playsets LLC, called Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite to see if they could help make Brody’s Dream Playground a reality. Representatives from Playworx Playsets LLC, Georgia’s sales representative for Little Tikes Commercial, met with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta representatives to come up with a design.

“Little Tikes Commercial was able to help us reach our goals in a way that no other company was willing or able to do,” said Natalie Owens, Senior Interior Designer at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “We were constrained by a relatively small space, as well as the need to make this space fun for kids of all ages and conditions. Little Tikes Commercial created a unique two-level structure that gives enough clearance for IV poles and wheelchairs to roll underneath the second level. Other activities, such as the weather and music stations and ladybug ride, are fun for younger children. This is truly a playground that will be enjoyed by everyone. We really appreciated Little Tikes Commercial’s generosity and flexibility with this project. They helped us bring Brody’s Dream to life and we could not be happier!”

The vision for the new playground is one that allows children like Brody with serious medical conditions an area to play without restrictions. Brody’s Dream Playground was designed to allow children access to inclusive play components capable of accommodating IV poles, wheelchairs, and other special needs equipment.

“This playground is very special because it provides something for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy,” said Owens. “Young children can enjoy the play stations and ladybug, while older children can play on the larger structure and slide. The entire playground is ADA compliant, with rubber flooring making it easy for IV poles and wheelchairs to move around, and multiple activities available that can be enjoyed regardless of mobility. The playground is not only fun for our patients, but also their siblings and friends.”

The playground design selected is a Gelefish™ structure, which features eight play event locations, including ground-level activity panels. The Melody Maker Panel provides sensory stimulation to children of all ages with its full octave range keyboard that allows children to create their own music. Scarlet the Ladybug, which is also ADA friendly, is a spring rider that encourages social and imaginative play. The playground also incorporates several different red versions of Brody’s beloved slides.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for Brody’s Dream Playground was held on Sunday, June 10th, with many of Brody’s family members, friends, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta staff and patients in attendance.

“When we learned of Brody’s story, we knew right away we wanted to be involved,” said David Howard. “From conception to completion everyone was a joy to work with. Helping out with this great cause in such a special hospital has changed our lives. It was an honor being a part of making Brody’s Dream come true.”
