“We sent a letter to Mr. Blake in which we suggested a meeting between influential Americans and Sri Lankan Tamils,” said a press spokesman for Tamils for Obama. “Our hope for this meeting is that the Tamils will make the Americans aware of the steady destruction of the Tamil people in Ceylon.”
Robert O. Blake, to whom the letter was addressed, is the Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs.
“We told Mr. Blake that we are worried that few influential people in the United States are aware of the worsening situation for Tamils in Sri Lanka,” explained the spokesman. “We told him that the Tamils there are ‘day by day being crushed and degraded. Their culture, lives, property, and dignity are being progressively taken from them.’”
In the letter, the Tamils for Obama spokesman went on, “We told Assistant Secretary Blake that it is just a matter of time, or so it seems to us, before this Sri Lankan policy of erasing the Tamil people from the record and history of Ceylon is an established fact.
“We want to inform the world (including the US) that this erasure is now going on,” said the spokesman. “If we don’t shine a light on it now, we fear, it will be completed and irreversible before the world learns about it.
“We know that the State Department is better at this kind of thing than we are,’ said the spokesperson for Tamils for Obama. “So, we hope that we can persuade Mr. Blake and the State Department to proceed with this.”

Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. We supported Hillary Clinton and then Barack Obama in the Democratic primary and US general election in 2008. We believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan civil war. We have watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Singhalese victors after the war, and we strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.
