ISO . . . is experiencing a surge of interest among hospitals

Veteran healthcare executive Rebecca Wise has departed DNV Healthcare to launch a new firm, Wise Quality Associates, to help hospitals realize the full potential of global quality systems such as ISO 9001 and Baldrige. ISO, in particular, is experiencing a surge of interest among hospitals, on its own and also as a compliance requirement of the CMS-approved accreditation program from DNV Healthcare.

Becky led the development and CMS approval of the DNV NIAHO hospital accreditation program, the first ever to integrate ISO 9001with Medicare Conditions of Participation. She now turns that experience toward an emerging “quality gap” among hospitals wanting to embrace a true Quality Management System but unsure how to fully implement one.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned the past few years, inside the DNV program, is that hospitals will never go back to the old way . . . but many of them just don’t know how to take full advantage of these new concepts,” says Ms. Wise. “That’s largely due to the unfamiliar terminology of ISO, which though not created for healthcare is becoming a game-changer because of its ability to reduce risk and focus complex organizations on process improvement and constant, small-step innovation.”

As more hospitals turn the corner, the need for skilled quality coaching grows.

Wise Quality Associates steps into that void under the leadership of Ms. Wise and with a growing staff of accreditation surveyors and ISO-qualified trainers. Wise personnel are fluent in modern quality standards but also intimately know the unique workflows and business pressures of hospitals.

In addition to supporting the DNV NIAHO and ISO processes, Wise Quality Associates will also provide expert assistance for TCJ accredited hospitals, offering mock surveys and a full range of training programs for hospitals.

The initial training courses are:

  • “ISO 9001 & NIAHO Standards.” A highly interactive four-and-a-half day course covering all the ISO and NIAHO requirements.
  • “Performing Internal Audits.” A 2-day hands-on course training hospital personnel to conduct internal audits required by ISO 9001 standards.
  • “Management Overview.” A 4-hour course designed for executive teams and board members that demystifies ISO and explains how ISO-based accreditation integrates seamless with hospital quality initiatives.

Wise Quality Associates is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and delivers its services both nationally and internationally.
