As an innovative move away from the traditional customer loyalty program, Renaissance Retail is tapping into the online social habits of its customers. Instead of simply giving points for dollars spent, members of the DiscoverThis.com rewards program and the ModelersWorkbench.com rewards program will also receive points for being social. Actions that earn points center on improving the customers’ overall shopping experience in two distinct ways. They can cash in rewards to save money on future products, and their actions to earn points also make them part of social groups with similar interests in science kits for kids or plastic model kits.
While the loyalty programs at the two websites are independent of one another, they do share many of the same features. Members earn points per purchase, points for referring a friend, and even some points to get the ball rolling when they enroll. Other points are earned for writing product reviews, signing up for the email newsletter, and following the site on Twitter. When enough have accrued, the rewards points can be used towards gift certificates and special member’s only offers. Badges, such as the Social Scientist or School Champion, can be unlocked for even more rewards points.
Alex Miller, President of Renaissance Retail, the parent company of Modeler’s Workbench and Discover This explained how he expected the program to improve the overall shopping experience on the websites. “Our customers will have even more information to help them make educated purchasing decisions, and earning the points is really fun, especially because it leads to earning more of the products they love.” Miller also looks forward to seeing how the program will allow like-minded people to more easily connect with one another through Twitter and Facebook. In the case of Modeler’s Workbench, they can share advice on finishing a plastic model car kit, while Discover This rewards members can recommend and help others through assembly of model rocket kits.
Modeler’s Workbench is the Internet’s first community based retail website for modeling enthusiasts, and Discover This is the leading source for educational science kits and science toys. As a family owned and operated business, its mission is to keep modelers well informed and children mentally active. Headquartered in Lake Forest, Illinois, Discover This and Modeler’s Workbench are divisions of Renaissance Retail, the Internet’s leading source for specialty consumer products.
