International experts from around the world discuss state-of-the art evaluation and management of valvular heart disease in 25 interviews posted online on the website of Valves in the Heart of the Big Apple.
Dr. Randy Martin, Piedmont Health Institute, interviewed members of the faculty of Valves in the Heart of the Big Apple VII: Evaluation & Management of Valvular Heart Diseases 2012 during the conference in April in New York City. Attended by over 650 participants, the event was the Fourth Scientific Session of the Heart Valve Society of America (HVSA) and Society of Heart Valve Disease (SHVD).
Valvular heart diseases are among the most prominent causes of heart failure and premature death. It is estimated that more than 10 million Americans have some type of heart valve abnormality, and, in approximately five million, the disease is moderate to severe. Three to four million will require surgery at some time in their lives. These numbers are growing as the population ages — heart valve diseases develop with aging.
