California Southern University is pleased to announce that Sukhee Kang, mayor of Irvine, California, will deliver a special address at the university’s 34th annual commencement. The ceremony will be held at Cheng Hall at Irvine’s Barclay Theatre at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2012.
“We are thrilled that Mayor Kang will speak at this year’s commencement ceremony,” says University President Dr. Caroll Ryan. “He is an engaging and inclusive leader and his is a truly unique American success story. Throughout his political career, he has been a passionate advocate for excellence and innovation in education, and I know his remarks will resonate with CalSouthern’s graduates.”
An experienced and successful business executive, Mayor Kang has served as mayor of Irvine since 2008. Raised in South Korea—where he graduated with a degree in agricultural economics from the prestigious Korea University—he is the first Korean-American to be elected mayor of a major American city. His terms in office have reflected a dedication to children’s health, public transit, and consensus-based leadership, in addition to a prioritization of education-related issues.
This year marks the third consecutive year the CalSouthern commencement ceremony has been held at the spectacular Barclay Theatre. In 2011, approximately 500 people attended the event, including CalSouthern graduates, family and friends, along with faculty and CalSouthern administration. The graduates—ranging in age from 22 to 75 and representing the full spectrum of ethnic and economic backgrounds—included successful entrepreneurs, groundbreaking psychotherapists, a recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Medal of Patriotism, and even a sitting judge, among many others.
