Rochester, MA (PRWEB) June 27, 2012

Shea Concrete Products, one of the largest precast concrete manufacturers in New England, has successfully delivered a fully fitted, precast concrete, restroom building at Pleasant Road Beach in the town of Harwich, Mass. Despite time and budget constraints, the project was completed in time for the Cape Cod town’s tourist season.

The structure built for the town is an Easi-Set® Precast Concrete Building, which was delivered pre-assembled and placed on owner’s prepared stone foundation in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. In addition, the building was provided by the manufacturer with all the necessary openings as specified by contractor in conformance with manufacturer’s structural requirements. The building met all necessary community and industry code requirements and was built to withstand coastal flooding and extreme weather.

“Our Easi-Set® product line includes standard buildings, but we find that every project requires customization and the personal touch,” Gregory Stratis, manager of Shea Concrete Products, said. “We take pride in accommodating the owner’s goals for each project. One way we keep the owners involved is informing them of our process and decisions throughout the production.”

This accommodating of the client was apparent in speaking with Robert Cafarelli, the engineer for the Town of Harwich. “I cannot say enough how great it was to work with Shea Concrete,” Cafarelli said. “Whenever there was a question or an obstacle, they addressed it immediately. Whenever they gave us a recommendation, it was the right answer.”

When Shea Concrete won the bid for this project, the town was clear on expectations. They sought a structure that would last. The existing wood structure was falling apart; the new structure needed to survive the elements, blend in with the beach area, and have the amenities beach-goers demand.

The exterior of the restroom retains the town’s desire to have the look and feel of a Cape Cod-style structure, while having the strength to stand up to New England weather with minimum maintenance. The building, despite being all concrete, has a roof that looks like cedar shakes and siding with a barn board appearance.

“One of the best compliments we can give Shea Concrete is that nobody has complained about the structure,” Cafarelli said with a chuckle. “In almost every municipal project, there is someone that complains about the style or the design. However, they really understood what we were looking for. The structure fits in great with blue water, the brown sand, and blue sky.”
In regard to interior features, the goal was to provide Harwich with a facility that could withstand the human and natural demands placed upon it. The plumbing includes copper pipes that lead to cast-iron drainage. In addition, Shea Concrete fitted sensor-activated stainless steel fixtures throughout the rest room, and the building is handicap accessible.

“When you work for a municipality, you have limited funds, so having a structure that can sustain the salty atmosphere year after year is important,” Cafarelli said. “Even the plumbing was set up for long-term use. When we brought our plumber in to hook up the fixtures, he was very complimentary to the work Shea Concrete had done.”

In recommending Shea Concrete, Cafarelli stated that time was important, as the tourist season was about to get underway. “They more than met their deadline. Simply put, working with Shea Concrete was a pleasant experience.”
