Shelton, CT (PRWEB) June 28, 2012

TOMRA Compaction, LLC (formerly Orwak USA), a unit of TOMRA of North America, Inc. and world leader in compaction and baling solutions for solid waste material at source, today announced that its client Evelyn Hill, food concession operator at the Statue of Liberty and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, has been awarded a National Restaurant Association “Operator Innovations Award” for its sustainability program at the association’s conference in May.

Last year, the Evelyn Hill concession on the islands recycled 94% of its total waste, helped in part by Orwak’s compactor/balers. Since 2010, Evelyn Hill has been using Orwak balers on both islands, to allow concession staff to safely and easily crush PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles and aluminum containers, and bale them into manageable cubes for transport.

During the peak summer months, the concession compacts and bales 5,580 lbs of plastic bottles and 410 lbs of aluminum. Evelyn Hill partners with Action Carting, a Newark-based solid waste disposal company, to remove the recyclables, via water transport, and bring them to a nearby material recovery facility.

“It’s great to see one of our most treasured National Parks recognized for its record on sustainability. Evelyn Hill is a model for both public and private facilities – not only in recycling, but also in energy conservation, composting and building design,” says J. Mark Lanning, VP of Sales for TOMRA North America. “We’re honored to be helping Evelyn Hill provide the public with high-quality, environmentally sustainable services.”
