Sleep Outfitters and Junior League of Columbus to host gala celebrating the grand opening of the Universal Design Living Laboratory. This event will mark the start of a series of tours of this national demonstration home that will raise funds for spinal cord injury research.

The grand opening of the Universal Design Living Laboratory, a home at 6141 Clark State Road, Columbus, OH, will be marked on July 26, 2012 with a gala event. Called the UDLL, this home is a living laboratory masterfully designed to test and improve innovations in home design. UDLL also accommodates better living for people with physical disabilities.

Sleep Outfitters and the Junior League of Columbus join UDLL owners, Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D. and Mark Leder, in welcoming guests to their own private tour of the home. After the preview party, a fund raiser for the Junior League, the proceeds from a series of tours will raise funds for spinal cord injury research. Rossetti and Leder, along with some of their design team, will be on hand at the event to enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and to share their inspiring stories. Tickets are $40 each through June 30 and $50 from July 1 to July 26, 2012.

For Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D., who was disabled as a result of an improbable spinal cord injury, and her husband, Mark Leder, the UDLL is the result of eight years of vision, design and innovation. It is a masterpiece of Arts and Crafts architecture, universal design, and environmentally friendly design. Every element of the space is planned to allow for universal use, giving individuals with and without physical limitations more access, independence, comfort and safety. The stucco and Cultured Stone® stone veneer exterior complement the warm, honey colored cabinets and hickory hardwood flooring.

The home includes features which are not commonly seen in home design but are functional and aesthetically pleasing. Some examples are appliances, including a side hinged oven and a steam cooker. The kitchen center island has three countertop heights. There are many unique and artful design elements; one is the decorative glass of the grand front door. This door was designed with several small clear glass circles at varying heights to provide views of people on the porch. The home and its landscape were designed, constructed and furnished through several generous contributions by companies such as Sleep Outfitters.
