Joining Postal Credit Union (PCU) in Minnesota just got a lot easier, thanks to the expansion of a unique scholarship fund established by a group of postmasters over three decades ago.
At its February board meeting, PCU’s Board of Directors approved a bylaw amendment to extend credit union membership to anyone who makes a one-time $5.00 donation to the John D. Miller scholarship fund. The move restores the original intent of the fund, which had been limited to Minnesota and Wisconsin. Essentially this means anyone in the continental United States can join PCU. This is good news for those wanting to utilize the wide variety of affordable services the credit union offers, regardless of where they live. It also provides a great opportunity to strengthen and grow PCU’s member base in years to come. The amendment was announced at the PCU Annual Meeting April 29.
In 1980, a scholarship fund was created by a group of postmasters who felt the importance of education in our society. The group joined forces with St. Paul Postal Employees Credit Union, now known as Postal Credit Union (PCU), and held its first Scholarship Golf Tournament to raise monies. That first year, there were 3 scholarships awarded for $500 each.
In 1992, the group named the foundation the John D. Miller Scholarship. John Miller was a postmaster in Hinckley and Lake City, Minnesota. He was the driving force from the onset to create and administer this fund year after year. Since its inception, the John D. Miller Scholarship program has helped hundreds of worthy students pay for their post-secondary education. It has also opened the doors to membership at PCU for those not eligible to join through the credit union’s 6 county community charter.
In its 32 years of existence, the John D. Miller Scholarship foundation has awarded over $225,000 to deserving students. The next charity golf tournament is scheduled for July 27 at Grand National Golf Course in Hinckley, Minn. For details visit http://www.postalcu.org.
