In a two-part podcast covering a wide-range of Human Capital Management (HCM) issues facing retailers today, Ceridian Dayforce Retail Consultant John Orr laid out the key challenges facing retailers as it relates to workforce management. On part one of the podcast, Orr focused on compliance among labor laws and visibility of the business. On part two, he addressed the need for speed as a big trend in retailer HCM. The complete podcast is found on retail industry thought leadership web site Whatsnextretail.com.
Orr said, “Retailers are under attack from many angles. There is scarce talent, they’re in a high turnover industry, and they’re being legislated left and right, whether it’s gift card legislation in NJ, or California labor laws and class-action lawsuits.” On the podcast, Orr discussed the challenges retailers face navigating through this landscape.
Orr said retailers are expressing the need for better visibility at the store level and above store. Legacy applications, however, have fallen very short in giving retailers access to the information they need. “Most retailers are fraught with manual processes, inefficiencies and spreadsheets. The reporting from these systems is not timely enough for the executives to be proactive and make the decisions they need to do on a day-to-day basis.”
An expert on business systems for retailers, Orr said most of the legacy HCM or ERP solutions on the market are cursed with primarily three problems. One is that they don’t provide a single consistent intuitive user experience, without which the adoption is low and training and change management is high. Second, there’s no inherent integration between HR, payroll, workforce management--therefore, there’s a lot of expense and points of failure in all the interfaces that are required to be built with all the redundant data. Third, there’s no ability to truly leverage the synthesis that you can get out of a human capital management that offers a holistic view.
