MIAMI (PRWEB) June 29, 2012
Advanced Wireless Group, LLC (AWG), a leader in design, integration, and operation of large venue public wireless networks, announced today that it has been awarded the wireless Internet services (Wi-Fi) contract for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) following approval from the Los Angeles City Council.
AWG, the largest provider of free airport Wi-Fi services, will transition service from the airport’s current wireless operator, T-Mobile on July 16, ensuring no interruption in Wi-Fi service to LAX passengers. In addition, implementation of major upgrades to the existing infrastructure is already underway to expand the network capacity to meet the exponential demand created by increased usage under the free model. As part of the deal, LAX, the third-largest airport in the U.S., will become the largest U.S. airport offering truly free, unrestricted Internet access.
Under AWG’s hybrid service model, airport customers will have the option to choose between complimentary, sponsored Wi-Fi sessions of 45 minutes in length after viewing a 30-second commercial, or selecting a premium speed, advertising-free service for a nominal fee. AWG pioneered this hybrid Wi-Fi model as part of the company’s founding in 2004, having recognized the demand for both free Wi-Fi and premium paid services.
“Airport passengers have come to expect a complimentary access option for Wi-Fi Internet service as a basic airport amenity,” said Scott Phillips, President & CEO of AWG. “Airports are faced with the unique challenge of balancing their need to provide this important passenger service with generating associated revenue to offset the exponential growth in costs.”
Based on the details of this concession agreement, AWG will provide Wi-Fi services for two years, with an option for a third year. LAX joins AWG’s portfolio of airports that have transitioned from paid access to offering complimentary service, including Boston’s Logan (BOS) and San Francisco (SFO). Additionally, all of AWG’s current 13 partner airports, alongside LAX, have the opportunity to use the airport-centric wireless portal as a touch point to communicate with their passengers about services and events within the airport.
