If you’re ever in Gary, Indiana and just so happen to come by Taney and 15th, stop by and ask for a guy named Rocky. You’ll find him in a Chicago Bulls hat and he’ll put you on some of the hottest mixtapes out there. No kidding! In his bag, look thoroughly for this name, Number 1 Playaz. Yeah, you may not have heard of them, but then again, have you ever really heard of Gary, Indiana? The often slept on, but recognized by those that know, G.I is the birthplace of the Jackson 5. It’s a landmark under the unlikeliest of circumstances and home of brothers Playo (Jerry Hayom, Jr.), O-Dogg (Orlando Haymon) and friend T-Turner (Antonio Turner). Just like the old steel mills that used to hum during the summer months on Cline Street and helped to earn the city one of its many nicknames like The Steel City, Number 1 Playaz is poised to earn a few honors of its own.
The most known unknown hometown heroes Number 1 Playaz have sold over 6,000 combined units independently of various mixtapes out of the trunk of their cars. Throughout the years, Number 1 Playaz have performed with some of today’s hottest acts such as the Ying Yang Twins, Lil Scrappy, Soulja Boy, Wiz Khalifa, Waka Flocka, Tity Boi (2 Chainz), Freddie Gibbs, Machine Gun Kelly, Royce Da 5’9”, Juvenile, Jody Breeze and Devin the Dude. T-Turner talks about this experience: “Performing with these artists was a blessing.” O-Dogg followed up, “I would watch the way they (artists) carried themselves on stage, and take notes off of how they controlled the crowd with their performances.”
Number 1 Playaz is ready to take their hometown stride to a national level with, “Put Me In The Game,” the upcoming single off the mixtape, Put Us In the Game, set to be released July 10th with a music video soon to follow, shot and directed by Antwan Smith best known for his work with Rick Ross, Trina, Flo-Rida, and Trey Songz. This is a single professing their desire to be in the Hip-Hop industry to prove they are number one.
The mixtape, Put Us In The Game, dropping on Datpiff hosted by DJ Smallz a.k.a Mr. Southern Smoke (Big Boi of Outkast, UGK, Master P and Three 6 Mafia, Lil’ Jon, Ludacris, and T.I.) on September 3-9, 2012 continues their stride to “making it” into the industry. With an album, Go National, on the horizon O-Dogg continues, “everything we have ever experienced, everything we have lived through, and every emotion.
