New Freedom, PA (PRWEB) June 29, 2012
OAKWORKS®, Inc., the premier U.S. manufacturer of spa, massage, and medical equipment, today announced the creation of an alliance with The World Skin Project. The WSP was founded by Annie Powell, and serves to educate massage therapists on the dangers of Skin Cancer, especially melanoma. Ms. Powell explained that, “The mission of The World Skin Project is to reduce the occurrence of Skin Cancer through the promotion of early detection, prevention and awareness.” Ms. Powell serves as President of the non-profit organization based in Bellingham, MA. She is a LMT and cancer survivor who had her melanoma detected by another massage therapist.
Mr. Riach commented that, “Oakworks deeply respects the mission of The World Skin Project and, through our long affiliation with the massage industry; we seek to help the WSP in their work. Oakworks Marketing, Sales and Video Production departments will all unite in a combined effort to spread the word about this dangerous condition. Massage therapists are well positioned to recognize Skin Cancer when properly trained to do so.” Annie Powell has recently worked with Oakworks Video Production department to create promotional videos for The World Skin Project, which can be found on Oakworks’ educational blog site, oakworksblog.massagetables.com. They also plan to collaborate on promotion of the charity through various social media outlets.
Since this type of cancer predominantly occurs in skin, massage therapist are well positioned to assist in early detection. Worldwide, doctors diagnose 160,000 new cases of melanoma yearly. According to a WHO report, about 48,000 melanoma related deaths occur worldwide every year. Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer with over 2 million people diagnosed every year. One in five Americans will develop Skin Cancer in the course of a lifetime.
Richard Elsen, CSO of Oakworks commented that, “There are an estimated 80 million massages scheduled every year in the US. This represents 80 million opportunities for the early detection of skin cancer. How well a patient does depends greatly on how quickly the cancer was diagnosed. We fully support the efforts of The World Skin Project and their mission to reduce the occurrence of skin cancer.”
Ms. Powell went on to express her deep appreciation for all the support the WSP receives from Oakworks. “The support we receive from Oakworks is a clear indication of the commitment they have in helping to educate the public on this major healthcare issue. I would like to personally thank them for all they are doing to support our efforts.”
The World Skin Project will be featured on the Today Show, July 10th 2012, with a personal appearance by Annie Powell.
