Sport and camping equipment retailers have run a tough race over the five years through 2011-12, with industry sales expected to post weak annualised growth of just 0.4%. Sport and Camping Equipment Retailing industry trading conditions have been affected by strong competition from external operators (namely department stores and footwear retailers) and a weak retail market. Consumer demand for sport and camping equipment has also been influenced by annual trends in real household disposable income, sports participation rates and leisure time availability. Industry sales are forecast to grow by 2.1% to $4.1 billion over 2011-12. Sales will be driven by solid growth in sports participation rates and increased consumer demand for sporting equipment, particularly cycling goods since Cadel Evans became the first Australian to win the Tour de France in July 2011. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Claudia Burgio-Ficca, “retail demand will also be aided by growth in disposable incomes and continued consumer awareness about the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle”.
Despite some merger and acquisition activity, Sport and Camping Equipment Retailing industry market share concentration remains at a low level. Industry concentration levels have been subject to modest competition from external operators over the past five years. Burgio-Ficca adds, “while a range of other retailers such as department stores, clothing retailers, toy and game retailers and footwear retailers have continued to offer a range of sporting and camping goods, they have been unable to meet the same level of expertise and specialisation as operators in the industry”.
The Sport and Camping Equipment Retailing industry is forecast to post a steady performance over the next five years. Demand will be supported by growth in disposable incomes, which will fuel expenditure on sports and camping equipment and provide consumers with the necessary income to allocate towards a new sporting or fitness regime, exhibited by a rise in sports participation. However, retail sales over this period will face strong competition from external operators, with department stores in particular expected to exert strong price-based competition. Industry sales growth will be aided by the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the Winter Olympic Games in Russia and the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
