According to author George H. Schofield, PhD, people over 50 are facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities due to getting older, longer life spans, the changing face of retirement, and the economic climate. This includes having enough money for retirement and the rest of their lives, working for many more years than planned, taking care of elderly parents, living with adult children, and creating meaningful, satisfying lives.
“After 50 It’s Up To Us, Developing The Skills and Agility We’ll Need” gives people the tools they need for positive aging: to create a quality lifestyle, reach their goals and dreams faster, enjoy great relationship and get ready for the future, even when life doesn’t go according to plan.
According to Schofield, the book sets forth a learning framework with exercises, reflections, and real life examples designed to help people have the best possible second adulthood.
77 million people in the US will be over 50 by 2015 and will represent 27% of the US. By 2030 the 65+ population will double to about 71.5 million people, according to Schofield.
Schofield reminds readers that their personal identities have been driven by circumstances (roles, family, work, achievement, etc), and describes how this identity needs to change as they move into their 50s and beyond. He has created a new vocabulary to help people over 50 understand and deal with the transitions they are certain to face while getting older.
The book based on Schofield’s experience and expertise in aging, psychology, lifelong learning, human development, and interviews with numerous people ages 50 to 97.
