Pyramid Educational Consultants, home of the Picture Exchange Communication System™ (PECS™) and the Pyramid Approach to Education™, has officially turned 20 this year.
To celebrate twenty years of PECS, Pyramid has launched a distinctive global campaign to seek out the best-illustrated use of PECS in the home, school, or community. From now until July 20, 2012, anyone can submit their photos or videos of PECS in use to http://www.pecsmediacontest.com. There will be four winners total, a grand prize and runner up for both video and photo submissions. Entrants have a chance to win $1000, $750, $500, or $300 in Pyramid Products. Winners will be selected and announced no later than September 15, 2012.
The PECS protocol is a picture-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system that is used around the world. When Pyramid Educational Consultants first opened its doors for business in 1992, co-creators Andy Bondy and Lori Frost did not expect their small company would become what it is today. They set out to spread the incredible amount of knowledge they have acquired through rigorous studies and research, with a mission to provide the means to communicate to everyone who needed it. Bondy and Frost developed PECS with a combination of a teaching strategy called the Pyramid Approach to Education™ and functional Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). PECS Training begins with the learner successfully exchanging a picture with a Communicative Partner for a requested item. An individual is never forced to learn speech; however, this outcome is common among users who learn PECS with very little or no prior language skills.
Entries are arriving daily and the selection process has already started. An example of what has been submitted so far depicts a young learner illustrating Phase II of PECS which is distance and persistence. On a nice day in the park the learner travels to his PECS Communication Book to obtain the picture of his desired item and runs back to his Communicative Partner to exchange the picture for the item. The partner quickly reinforces the boy’s efforts.
After two decades of delivering educational workshops and generating useful and unique products, Pyramid Educational Consultants operate offices in 12 countries and the PECS Training Manual 2nd Edition, which is the foundation for all PECS training, is available in 10 different languages. Those who have benefited from the use of PECS are urged to share their success. A picture is worth a thousand words, and a video could be worth a thousand dollars in PECS products!
