The trip will focus on rock art sites in central India and Rajasthan taking visitors to sites at Bundi, Bhimbetka, and Pachmarhi. While Bhimbetka is a World Heritage site the rock art at Bundi and Pachmarhi is rarely visited despite the fact that these two locations probably have some of the best panels in the world.

The trip will begin from Jaipur where guests will relax and spend a day enjoying the local sites including the Amber Fort and the Pink City before proceeding overland to the small city of Kota from which we will base a day trip to the sites at Bundi. The rock art sites of Bundi are some of the oldest in India dating back 15000 years. The natural setting is fantastic as they are located in natural shelters and caves near the Garada River.

The next leg of the trip is to Bhimbetka, a World Heritage Site, which hosts a fantastic collection of easily accessible pre-historic paintings some dating back more than 10,000 years. The paintings are in variety of colors and depict a variety of scenes from everyday cultural occurrences to hunting and honey collection.

The final group of rock art sites that will be visited are near the small hill station of Pachmarhi. Most of the sites are located in caves and alcoves that lie off the road and trails used by locals but are still quite accessible with the help of a knowledgeable guide. These panels are fantastic and comparable in quality to the best panels found in Australia or the southwestern United States.

It is a unique offering and an exclusive trip and available only to interested parties who make advance arrangements which can be made by contacting Dr.Urmann. Dr. Urmann commented “This trip is inspired out of my personal interest in the subject and having had the opportunity and fortune to explore some great rock art sites in India. The rock art sites at Pachmarhi and Bundi are located in places that most visitors would have a hard time reaching independently and it was only after making numerous excurisions to these locations that I was able to develop first hand relationships with a number of experienced guides in each area that are familiar with the local rock art sites.”
