The lessons in the Iggy the Iguana and Turtle Town Series have been recognized as useful tools for children and adults to use in efforts to bring forth realists topics of discussion that elementary school students go through, thereby opening up a channel for communication and questions for parent and child or student and teacher. The foundation of the character interaction in Iggy the Iguana was carefully crafted with an intentional background of psychology. Awareness of diversity and acceptance in regards to family structure, outward appearance, culture, gender, personality style, and emotional well-being have been used realistically while using fun-loving characters to lighten the read.

About the Author:
Melissa M. Williams is a children’s author, the owner of LongTale Publishing and the president and co-founder of the READ3Zero Literacy Foundation. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Melissa has been writing stories since she was a little girl and still uses that childhood love for imagination to relate to her young readers today. During graduate school, Melissa began substitute teaching for elementary grades in order to learn from her students. Melissa’s first series, Iggy the Iguana came out in 2008 after completing a Master’s degree in professional counseling and the Turtle Town series soon followed. As a children’s author and public speaker, Melissa discovered a new passion to work directly with creative kids and started the I Write Publishing Contest in 2010, offering opportunities for children to learn from her own background in the world of writing and publishing. Melissa spends the year speaking at schools and giving hands on insight into the writing and publishing process during her creative writing presentations. Since 2008 she has visited over 150 schools across Texas and California. Melissa also hosts writing workshops, summer camps and book clubs for kids through out the year in order to stay close to the most important people in her work, her readers. It is her goal that READ3Zero will not only encourage children to enhance their love for literature and inspire their imaginations, but also strengthen the self-esteem of our youth to stand up and make learning fun again. She has been interviewed on Channel 2 News and Fox 26 News Houston, CNN 650 Radio and KPVU 91.3 FM Public Radio and has been a guest presenter at the following events:
