Located in Tennessee, the Hamilton County School System is preparing to employ the services of a collection agency in order to collect school lunch debts, pending a final vote at the school system’s July board meeting.

As of June 3, 2012, Rapid Recovery Solutions, Inc became aware that it has been reported that the Hamilton County School System in Tennessee is preparing to work alongside a collection agency in order to take care of a debt situation. It’s a move that is going to heavily impact families, as unpaid school lunch debts will be collected from those who used charges and bad checks. The money obtained through the debt collection will combat the amount of money that must be taken from the school system’s general fund to pay off debts owed from the previous school year’s meals. Though the preliminary vote from the Hamilton School Board passed, a vote at the board’s July meeting will be needed for final approval.

The types of families that will be impacted will depend on income level. Those that bring in less money, understandably, will have a more difficult time accumulating the funds in response to this instance of debt collecting. Families that meet the state and federal guidelines may be excluded from the rule, but other families may have a more difficult time with this issue. Families that pay reduced or full amounts for lunch will be impacted. Many claim paying off such debts is made even more impossible because of this.

Another side of the situation is that the parents of those who attend the school should be held responsible. Enrolling one’s child is not an inexpensive endeavor and everything, school lunches and all, should be accounted for. No school is a free service. “I think the school needs to be run like a business,” John Monderine, President and CEO of Rapid Recovery Solutions, Inc. said. “Someone has to pay the costs and it should be those who have the lunches.”

Many who support the actions of the Hamilton County School System understand that the educational system is trying to combat a repeat of the previous school year, which resulted in an owed $70,000 on school breakfasts, and lunches that will be paid from the school system’s general fund.
