Salazar’s unconventional means may have finally swayed even his toughest critics as Rupp and Farah continue to shock the world with their speeds and talent.
At the U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon, Rupp’s 10,000m time of 27:25:33 beat Meb Keflezighi’s former record by a whopping 11 seconds (an eternity on the track). Later, Rupp continued to show off his incredible abilities by turning in a 13:22:67 for the 5,000m. The time was the best at the Trials since running legend Steve Prefontaine’s 13:22:80 in 1972. Additionally, Rupp was the first American to win the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Trials in 60 years.
Across the pond, Mo Farah, Rupp’s training teammate and close friend, was also scoring major kudos by running 13:29:31 in the 5,000m at the European Champions. His time made him the first runner in the Championships’ 78-year history to defend his previous 5,000m title.
Certainly, Salazar’s innovative means for getting the most out of the runners under his tutelage by having them log considerable weekly miles on a HydroWorx X80 underwater treadmill (which he uses himself to stay in shape) is producing serious fruit.
As Salazar explains, “The recent Olympic Trials performances by Galen were greatly helped by our constant use of the HydroWorx underwater treadmills. We used them right up to the Trials and will keep using them through the Olympics.”
Rupp’s excitement is tough to contain, but he’s staying modest and pragmatic. “I’m getting in the water to help speed up the recovery process. [Then] we’re gonna hit it hard again for 3-4 weeks!”
HydroWorx, the manufacturer of the underwater treadmill used by Rupp, Farah and all members of the Oregon Project elite running team, is offering exclusive, invite-only interviews with Salazar and Michael Johnson at a London-based media event during the Olympics.
