The Fourth of July is a busy holiday with many people traveling. It’s important to take extra precautions and be careful on the roads, no matter what time of day it is.

The Fourth of July is often filled with cookouts, fireworks and road trips to visit family and friends, but it is important to remember to celebrate safely. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently reported that the death toll on America’s roads is highest on Independence Day. That’s why Amica Insurance is offering some tips to keep everyone safe on the roads this week.

“The Fourth of July is a busy holiday with many people traveling,” said Lisa DeCubellis, a senior assistant vice president with Amica Insurance. “It’s important to take extra precautions and be careful on the roads, no matter what time of day it is.”

According to recent reports, teens are involved in car crashes four times more often than any other age group. Teenagers need to concentrate on driving safely and always be aware of other drivers.

Here are a few reminders for all drivers:

• Don’t drink and drive. Make sure you have a designated driver.
• Always wear a seatbelt.
• Avoid distracted driving. Many states now ban the use of hand-held cell phones and/or texting while driving.
• Don’t speed or drive carelessly.
• Get plenty of rest before a long trip and stop for frequent breaks. Don’t drive when you’re tired.
• Slow down for road construction and beware of detours.
• Pay attention to road and weather conditions.

“Unfortunately, accidents can happen to even the safest drivers,” said DeCubellis. “It is important to stay calm if you are involved in a car crash.” Here are some tips to handle the situation effectively:

• Contact emergency personnel. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately.
• Exchange information with the other vehicle’s owner and obtain contact information from passengers and witnesses.
• Give the police your version of what happened. Always ask for the police officer’s name, department and incident number.
• Take photos and videos of the scene if it’s safe to do so.

“Enjoy the holiday, and make sure to drive safely to protect yourself and other drivers,” said DeCubellis.
