R.J. Weiss, CFP® and licensed Illinois home insurance agent, announced a new consumer awareness guide for current and prospective homeowners to help them avoid the five most common home insurance mistakes.

Titled, "How to Properly Insure Your Home for the Lowest Possible Price, the guide also gives readers four recommendations for finding the best insurance agent, and six questions they must ask any insurance agent before letting them insure their home.

“After seeing the confusion among the general public about important insurance concepts, I decided to write this free report to help homeowners understand what exactly it is their buying, and, just as important, what home insurance doesn’t buy. With this information, a homeowner can make an informed, intelligent decision as to how to insure their home properly, for the best possible price,” stated R.J. Weiss, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® and part of the fourth generation of Weiss’ to work at the family’s independent insurance agency in Illinois.

“For example, one common mistake I see homeowners making right now in Illinois is how much to insure their home for. Due to the slump in the housing market, many homeowners want to value their home for its current market value. However, it’s important to avoid this trap because if a home was to suffer a complete loss, the owner would like to get reimbursed for how much it costs to replace, not market value,” R.J. continued.

Other mistakes the consumer awareness guide educates current and prospective homeowners on include the definition of scheduled property, understanding financial strength of the insurance companies, replacement cost vs. actual cash value, and avoiding companies who use bait and switch pricing.

Last, the Illinois home insurance consumer awareness guide discusses how homeowners can save money through discounts and the best time of the year to quote their insurance.

Homeowners looking to download a free copy of the home insurance guide can visit the Homeowners Property Insurance section on the Weiss Insurance website.
