Leading components distributor sponsors six teams at 2012 event

RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the world’s leading high service distributor of electronics and maintenance products such as sockets and resistors, is helping to support the engineers of the future through its sponsorship of six university teams taking part in the annual Formula Student competition.

The global contest aims to inspire and develop enterprising and innovative young engineers by challenging them to design and build a single-seat racing car. From July 9-11, students will be put to the test both on and off the track at Northamptonshire’s famous Silverstone racetrack through demonstrating their understanding of engineering and through the vehicle’s performance.

RS has donated a range of products to six of the university teams taking part: University of Birmingham; University of Sussex; Oxford Brookes University; University of Strathclyde; University of Hertford; University of Coventry.

Sam Edwards from RS commented: “The motorsports industry regards Formula Student as setting the standard for engineering students around the globe. RS is extremely proud to support six of the teams taking part in what is a really tough competition. The challenge is usually part of their degree course so it brings engineering to life in an engaging yet realistic way. Part of this means sourcing products from RS – something they are likely to be doing on a daily basis when they enter the world of work.”

Teams are given a brief by Formula Student which asks them to produce a prototype car for evaluation. Students are examined on technical skills used to make the car, as well as management, marketing and people skills needed at all stages of the design and development process.

RS will be following the progress of each of the teams during the five day event via @RSComponents.
