PromaxBDA, an international association of design and marketing professionals in the entertainment industry, hosts the PromaxBDA Local Awards to celebrate best practices in promotion, marketing and design at local television news affiliates across the U.S. Local Award entries are submitted by news stations or producers of the end product.
The two award winning GO designs share several overall design features including contemporary, vibrant, light-driven backgrounds; multi-screen monitor arrays; multiple presentation venues and flexibility for different camera shots. Each had their own unique project goals and objectives.
The Talent ID’s for WABC were produced to promote the News Talent lineup for each of WABC’s News Casts. The marketing objective was to differentiate between the daytime, late afternoon, and nighttime shows. According to the project’s Creative Director, Rey Rodriguez, the challenge was placing images behind the talent that were generic enough to give a general New York feel without hi-lighting any specific areas. Two primary looks were developed – day and night. Talent was shot on green screen in order to allow updates to the lineup. The campaign has been very successful and well received by the WABC viewers. KXAN project’s goal was to raise the bar in their market by creating a news package that completely set themselves apart from their competition. The approach chosen was a bright, graphical, bold look that was on a white color base.
According to Ruth Dial, the project’s Creative Director, “the lowerthird is a vital part of the newscast. It has more airtime than any other graphic. We wanted to keep it clean and minimal so as not distract from the content.” Dial went on to say, “KXAN Investigates is the station's flagship franchise. This Open was challenging because it had to incorporate a host of description words and also use a camera lens. Additionally, the palette we set for the over-all news look was clean and bright - not a usual palette for an investigative piece. We needed to design a hard-hitting investigative open that still felt like a part of this package. By using quick cuts and a fast pace, we were able to create a very unique and dynamic investigation open that still matched the entire brand.”
This untraditional package not only set them apart from their competition, but their numbers immediately improved upon airing the package, moving KXAN to the number one spot in the Austin, TX market. To see the KXAN demo reel click http://bit.ly/KXANreel.

KJRH-TV was a refresh designed by FX's award winner Kevin Vickers. The set was designed to exploit depth of field on a tight budget. With the careful placement of new colorful backlit scenic elements, modern finishes and a high-tech video wall designer, Vickers created a warm, versatile, inviting and now award winning news environment.
KPIX-TV the CBS O&O in San Francisco wanted a dynamic environment that gave them numerous shooting positions and incorporating the latest technology. Creative Designer and FX CEO, Mack McLaughlin, directed a design team resulting in a wrap around, self-illuminating environment laden with new technology. The set has been a huge hit with KPIX’s core market.
