South Florida resident and 13-time Grand Slam victor Serena Williams advances to the Wimbledon finals today against Agnieszka Radwanska, of Poland.
Williams, who lives in the private enclave of BallenIsles in Palm Beach Gardens with her equally famous sister Venus, threw down 24 aces in the semifinals match against opponent Victoria Azarenka and set a Wimbledon record. Williams went out in style, delivering a smoking serve to gain the final point and win the match.
The four-time Wimbledon champion broke her record of 23 aces, which she delivered on Centre Court last week.
Williams’ ascension to the final round is sort of a sweet redemption for the tennis star, who was eliminated in the first round of this year’s French Open.
The Williams sisters -- for the first time in two years -- appeared on the court as a team in the Wimbledon women’s doubles tournament. They reached the final round and soundly defeated the opposing U.S. team of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.
Serena and Venus Williams train regularly at the phenomenal tennis facilities in BallenIsles. The facilities include 22 tennis courts, 20 of which feature Har-Tru clay, and have been ranked No. 1 in the country. The courts surround a 62,000-square-foot sport complex that include stadium-style seating for 500, a full-service pro shop, a tennis lounge and skybox, and year-round exhibitions with world-class players.
Club tournaments at BallenIsles include singles, doubles and mixed championships, and special events include "Les Grandes Dames" and a series of Grand Slam matches.
Onsite tennis pros offer a variety of instructional clinics, including the Junior Development Tennis Program, adult camps and seminars, stroke drills and private lessons for students of all skill levels.
