Two experts from Vega – the leading plant-based, natural health and performance products company – are offering tips to beat the summer heat, naturally.
Brendan Brazier, vegan, Ironman champion and best-selling author on plant-based nutrition, knows firsthand the challenges for athletes training through the summer heat. Brendan recommends paying particular attention to consuming electrolytes, the electricity-conducting salts that help maintain hydration, improve the fluidity of muscle contractions, increase the heart’s efficiency, lower the heart rate, improve endurance and boost mental clarity.
“When we consume too much fluid that does not contain electrolytes, it can flush out the remaining electrolytes from our body, referred to as water intoxication,” says Brendan. “People who perform strenuous physical activity, especially in a warm environment, are susceptible.”
Instead of grabbing conventional sports drinks which contain unnecessary refined sugar and artificial flavor and color, Brendan suggests natural sources of electrolytes including coconut water, molasses and molasses sugar, seaweed (dulse and kelp in particular), bananas, tomatoes and celery.
Why do we often feel so tired in the hot summer months? Peggy Kotsopoulos, Team Vega’s registered holistic nutritionist and health educator, notes that dehydration is the most common cause of fatigue. Peggy recommends drinking half your body weight in ounces every day. So if you weigh 130 lbs, you need 65 ounces of water a day – just over eight cups.
“If there is not enough fluid in your body, blood volume can drop,” cautions Peggy. “As a result, your body and heart must work harder in order to supply your cells with oxygen and nutrients. Poor hydration results in mental fogginess, poor short-term memory, dizziness and fatigue.”
