A series of recent Government cuts to the feed-in-tariff scheme has left only one major national provider of free solar in the UK – A Shade Greener Ltd.

The Government’s feed-in-tariff scheme, which obliges power companies to pay subsidies for green energy (FITs), made it possible for some companies to offer free electric solar panels to members of the public who would not ordinarily be able to afford their own. These companies were able to recoup their costs by claiming the FITs themselves. They were popularly called ‘rent-a-roof schemes,’ and A Shade Greener invented the concept and was the first company to start offering free solar panels to the public.

Since the Government slashed the FITs from 43 pence per kilowatt hour to 16.8 pence the number of private companies able to provide free solar has plummeted. A Shade Greener is now the only major installer still operating in the majority of England and parts of South Wales.

Stewart Davies, Managing Director, says

"We have been providing FREE solar electric to customers for over two years and have installed over 10,000 free systems but there are still many people out there who are not even aware that they can cut their bills without having to invest any money, and there are many who believe that the free solar industry has died due to the massive cut in the FITs."

The company has stated that they have the capacity to install a further 20,000 free systems, which will save householders millions of pounds on their bills.

Stewart added,

"We have over 10,000 customers who are currently saving an estimated total of two million pounds each year on their electricity bills. With a further 20,000 systems to give away there is the potential to save UK homeowners a further four million pounds annually."

According to statistics published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change the average home could be reducing their electricity bill by an average of £197 per year based on 2011 energy prices. The details of the report can be found at http://ashadegreener.co.uk/savings/

Unfortunately the Government is planning further cuts in 2013 so it may be the last chance for UK residents to benefit from the opportunity to lower their bills for a guaranteed 25 years.

Stewart concluded,

"With ever increasing bills our free solar offer is a great way for people to cut their electric bill by an average of 37% annually for the next 25 years. This has the potential to save thousands of pounds without the need to part with a single penny. Without this type of rent-a-roof scheme those without thousands to invest in solar themselves would be excluded from benefiting from this clean source of power."
