Cancer Patients Set to Benefit from Acquisition by Largest Radiation Oncology Network

21st Century Oncology – the nation’s premier cancer treatment network and largest radiation therapy provider – is expanding its group of oncology experts with the recent acquisition of Cancer Consultants, a well-established Las Vegas medical oncology and hematology practice. The union adds two new physicians dedicated in the delivery of compassionate care, further growing services in a community that currently includes multiple 21st Century Oncology radiation treatment centers spanning from Las Vegas to Henderson.

The new merger will provide increased options and streamline treatment services for patients by incorporating two of the area’s leading cancer and blood disease authorities into the group. Now Rinah Shopnick, D.O., a Board Certified hematologist, and John Ellerton, M.D., C.M., a Board Certified medical oncologist, will be treating patients within the 21st Century Oncology organization through Cancer Consultants-Las Vegas.

“Partnering with Cancer Consultants brings long-standing medical oncology and hematology experience to our Southern Nevada practice. We are delighted to gain these outstanding physicians with a history of excellent patient care as part of the 21st Century Oncology family,” says Susan Reisinger, M.D., Board Certified radiation oncologist and Medical Director for the region for 21st Century Oncology.

Brian Lawenda, M.D., Board Certified radiation oncologist and the regional Clinical Director praises a collaborative approach to fighting cancer by combining varied treatment specialists under one team. “Our Las Vegas physicians, now including Doctors Shopnick and Ellerton, look forward to partnering to better serve patients in need of cancer and blood disorder treatments,” says Dr. Lawenda. “This acquisition represents our commitment to excellence in the field of oncology, and through this we hope to magnify our positive impact on the community.”

Rinah Shopnick, D.O.
“Joining 21st Century Oncology means partnering with a like-minded team focused on caring for the person, not just treating the disease,” says Dr. Rinah Shopnick. “We will collaborate to translate broad-reaching knowledge about high-quality cancer and hematology care into practice for our patients. With 21st Century Oncology, we will now be able to offer a more complete clinical research profile, fully-integrated electronic medical records, and synergistic access to the latest treatments and technologies.”

A longtime and highly respected Las Vegas area hematologist, Dr. Shopnick began her career at the University of Michigan and received her Bachelor of Science in Biology with high honors from Wayne State University. She continued her education at The New York Institute of Technology - New York College of Osteopathic Medicine where she obtained her medical degree.

Fulfilling her internship at Akron General Medical Center, and residency at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation where she remained on staff as a clinical consultant, she then completed a hematology fellowship with postdoctoral research at The Albany Medical College. Active in residency training at The University of Massachusetts and The New England Hemophilia Center, she received the teacher of the year accolade there. Dr. Shopnick went on to become a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

She has also held the position of Medical Director at both the Anticoagulation Clinic at University Medical Center and the Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center of Nevada, as well as serving as the Director of Medical Education at University Medical Center.

John Ellerton, M.D., C.M.
“Many cancer patients benefit from a multiple modality treatment plan, which may include both chemotherapy and radiation therapy,” explains Dr. John Ellerton. “I am proud to be partnering with 21st Century Oncology to help provide integrated care for each patient who walks through our doors.”

After earning his Bachelor of Science in Biology with distinction at McGill University in Montreal, Dr. Ellerton went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery degrees there.

Accomplishing his medical internship and residency at St. Michael’s Hospital along with a fellowship in hematology at the University of Toronto, Dr. Ellerton completed his university education with a fellowship in medical oncology at Tuft’s New England Medical Center in Boston.

Following serving on many related committees, as Medical Director of both Hematology and Coagulation as well as the Oncology Clinic and Unit, and as the Department of Medicine Chairman, Dr. Ellerton previously served as Chief of Staff at University Medical Center.

Dr. Ellerton believes in integrating clinical trials into oncology practice. He is a member of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Breast Cancer Steering Committee, whose goal is to identify and promote the “best science" in breast cancer clinical research.

Both Dr. Shopnick and Dr. Ellerton have been published in multiple medical journals and given presentations at national and international meetings on oncology and hematology-related topics.

Dr. Ellerton says, “As an oncologist, I know my patients trust me to walk them through one of the most difficult points in their lives. Through this exciting collaboration, our delivery of care will be more inclusive - with the combined expertise of a team of physicians behind every patient.”
