Azmark Aero Systems, an aerospace power system developer and aircraft hardware manufacturer in Gilbert Arizona, has developed and demonstrated the world’s smallest gas turbine driven generator system. The electric generator system is integrated directly into the engine. Thus, there is no gearbox and its associated losses. The system also features the world’s smallest annular heavy fuel combustor.
The current heavy-wall test unit (engine and generator) weighs roughly 1.5 lbs. Thermal efficiency is on the order of 5% and a future recuperated version will be anywhere from 11% to 18% efficient. The compressor is highly efficient for its size and has been operated at pressure ratios above 3.0.
In addition to low weight and volume, the high frequency sound of the small gas turbine is easily muffled making the system easily packageable. “We believe we can package the complete 400 Watt system with 8 hours of heavy fuel into something the size of a small desktop computer,” says David Shreiner, Azmark’s Vice President of Engineering and Program Management.
Azmark believes there is a market for tens of thousands of systems in the near future powering robots, aircraft, and interestingly, human performance enhancement suits. “Our original funding for development of the basic gas turbine came from the Defense Advanced Projects Agency (DARPA),” says Shreiner. “Our greatest advantage over fuel cells in portable applications is our size, which is roughly 1/10 that of reforming fuel cells.”
Azmark is currently seeking investors in this promising technology and interested parties can contact Jeff Weston at (480) 926-8969 or jweston(at)azmark(dot)aero for further information.
